DEPARTMENT OF LIFE SCIENCE
BIO-TECHNOLOGY DIVISION:

Emerged as a new subject, Biotechnology is an outcome of marriage of Biological Science with Technology. Multi-disciplinary strategies were formulated which led to the evolution of Biotechnology. The various techniques developed to produce rare and medicinally valuable molecules to change hereditary traits of plants and animals, to diagnose diseases, to produce useful chemicals and to clean-up and restore the environment have been specially included in the course design.

Due to exponentially rapid developments taking place in this area, no difference is found between pharmaceutical firms and biotechnology industry, as far as the demand of highly skilled manpower in this sector is concerned. The surge of products in the pipeline and renewed public confidence make it one of the most promising areas of economic growth in future.

The Biotechnology department of IASE has a rich tradition of a fine faculty and infrastructure where essential, common utility equipments are housed.

BIO-INFORMATICS DIVISION:

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field at the junction of several disciplines ranging from biology to mathematics and from computer science to information technology. The 'field' itself is more a tool to analyze and solve various biological problems and is becoming a part of the study of biology. Several factors have influenced the evolution of bioinformatics as a major tool for the modern biological research. viz, to solve complex biological problems and the parallel development of enabling technologies.

Technology has in several forms driven development of bioinformatics applications. Increase in the storage capacity and access speed of various computer databases have helped in managing the huge volumes of data generated. Faster processors and supercomputers have helped in analyzing this data. The internet has helped this effort further by globalizing the research efforts with the setting up of large public databases and bioinformatics utilities, free of cost, to be used by the global research community. Advances in engineering technology has helped to automate most research processes and build various state-of-the-art instruments such as Micro Array and Mass Spectrometers.
